Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis Comeback Talk Escalates, Opponent Sounded Out — Report

Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis’s return to the ring could be fast approaching, according to a new report.

The lightweight boxer was threatening to become a face of the sport for American boxing but rejected that label last year, during a press event ahead of a Jake Paul clash that never was, after mounting civil and legal issues came to light regarding alleged domestic violence, kidnapping, and battery.

Paul, through his fight firm Most Valuable Promotions, rescheduled the ‘Tank’ event on Netflix without Davis, recruiting the more ambassadorial figure Anthony Joshua, instead.

Davis’s inactivity ensures he’s now not boxed since a disputed draw with Lamont Roach almost one year ago.

However, according to Sports Illustrated columnist and DAZN presenter Chris Mannix, he could be set to fight this year against an old rival.

“Reps for Gervonta Davis and Isaac Cruz have discussed a rematch between the two rivals, I’m told.”

Though ‘Tank’ is an unbeaten devastating puncher, outside of Roach, it’s ‘Pitbull’ Cruz who gave the American one of the toughest tests of his career in a 12-round battle for the WBA lightweight title in Los Angeles, in 2021.

Cruz has since rebounded with wins over Yuriorkis Gamboa, Rolando Romero by knockout, and Angel Fierro in a fire-fight, outside of a narrow defeat to Jose Valenzuela. Cruz, like Davis, is coming off of a draw to Roach.

Per Mannix, a Davis vs Cruz rematch could land “mid-summer.”

Should Davis vs Cruz get added to the calendar it would join another key fight for the American market — a Cinco de Mayo clash between unified cruiserweight world boxing champion Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez and the 200-pound challenger, David Benavidez, whom has a shot at becoming a three-weight world title holder with a win over ‘Zurdo.’
