Deontay Wilder has had his say on a potential undisputed fight between his former opponent, Tyson Fury, and Ukrainian champion, Oleksandr Usyk.
There’s no love lost between Fury and Wilder, especially on Wilder’s side. He has long remained adamant that ‘The Gypsy King’ cheated to beat him in their second fight, despite no evidence and often absurd accusations.
Having said that, ‘The Bronze Bomber’ fancies Fury to come out victorious against the smaller man in Usyk. Speaking to FightHype.com, he broke down what might happen. Although it’s technically a compliment for Fury, he still managed to get a rule-breaking allegation in there.
“When you compare things up, Fury’s size is what makes him, I think, gain more success and stuff like that.
When I see him and Usyk … I see how they cheated [Steve] Cunningham with that clubbing. He laid his weight on him and then he grabbed him and clubbed him. I can see him doing the same thing with Usyk – putting his weight on him and stuff like that
I do think Usyk has more skill, but when it comes to the size … I don’t think Usyk will be able to compete with the size, the hanging and stuff.
But who knows? That’s just my opinion of things, but this is boxing. In boxing, styles make fights and different things may happen in it. If they do fight, then may the best man win and I wish them nothing but the best.”
Fury fought Steve Cunningham in 2013. The Brit was dropped in that fight, and has been quoted as saying Cunningham’s style was a tough test. After the knockdown, ‘The Gypsy King’ went on to win by knockout in round 7.
Wilder drawing similarities to the fight is interesting on two levels. First, as he points out, Fury should be able to use his weight as an advantage over Usyk. But, second, and perhaps more intriguing, is that it might point to Usyk being a tough night for ‘The Gypsy King.’
Should the fight be made, weights and game plans will undoubtedly be a major talking point in the lead up.
