Carlos Adames romped to a brutally dominant 12-round win over Austin ‘Ammo’ Williams in a WBC middleweight boxing world title defense on Saturday, March 21 at the Caribe Royale Orlando in Florida atop a Matchroom card on DAZN.
It was a statement performance from Adames who showed more variety to his pugilistic arsenal over a Williams who appeared, perhaps, too tough for his own good. Ammo had won four fights in a row since his 11th-round knockout defeat to Hamzah Sheeraz two years prior, but looked a level below Adames, who remains unbeaten now for seven years — since a defeat via decision to Patrick Teixeira in Las Vegas.
Adames gave Williams a taste of his power early in the fight, dropping the challenger to the canvas with a straight right hand in the second round. He held his lead thanks to experienced maturity, particularly when Williams appeared interested in more ambitious punching in an attempt to force momentum to swing his way.
There was more action from Williams in the sixth, but Adames, more rugged, manhandled Williams on the world stage, even knocking his mouthpiece out later in the fight.
Aside from a low blow in the final round, there was rarely a blemish on Adames’s work, who out-landed Ammo by a ratio greater than 2:1 with 254 for the champion, and 127 for Williams.
In agreement with the routing, the three judges awarded the champion’s work with a lopsided decision through scores of 117-109 (twice) and 118-108.
“I can go down to 154,” Adames said, about a move to super welterweight, rather than 160 at middleweight. “There’s a long list of people I want to fight at 160, and I want to put it out there. And at 168, I can fight anyone as well.”
Elsewhere on the Matchroom card, American Olympian Omari Jones advanced his boxing record to 6-0 (4 KOs) with a decision win over Christian Gomez at super welterweight. Heavyweight puncher Teremoana Teremoana also finished Curtis Harper in the very first round to move to 10-0 (10 KOs) — both prospects ones to still watch.
